American rapper and singer Coi Leray Collins has finally unlocked her highly anticipated project labeled “Trendsetter”, an impressive album.
Trendsetter is Coi Leray’s highly anticipated, debut studio album. The album follows her sophomore EP, [Now or Never])Now or Never by Coi Leray).
The albums name was inspired by Coi’s highly successful year of 2021 where many of her songs such as No More Parties (Remix),“ “TWINNEM,” and “BIG PURR (Prrdd)” going viral on the video-sharing platform TikTok. The songs were accompanied by their own dances leading the songs to become a “trend.”
Many of Coi’s most popular singles such as “Blick Blick” and “Anxiety” are also featured on the album as two of the four singles leading up to the project. Singles such as No More Parties (Remix),“ “TWINNEM,” and “BIG PURR (Prrdd)” was also featured in the tracklist of the album
On Friday, October 1, 2021, a supporter of Coi took to Twitter to ask her about the status of her upcoming project. “Any updates on the album?,” tweeted the fan, to which the “No More Parties” singer responded, “Na I’m sorry.” She elaborated moments later in subsequent posts.
“Feel like I’m ready for an album, but my label doesn’t think so,” she wrote. “So I’m just going with the flow. I hate the flow.”
Coi later dropped a new single titled “Okay Yeah!” in August of 2021. Coi was initially slated to drop “TRENDSETTER” on September 3, the same day Drake’s “Certified Lover Boy” was released and days after Kanye West’s “Donda” became available on streaming services. At the time, it wasn’t clear why Coi’s project never came out, but she let fans know that she wasn’t the least bit upset.
Coi has stated “Glad my album ain’t drop. Between Drake and Kanye, sheesh,” she wrote. “Everything happens for a reason. This gives me more time to tighten up. Maybe take some notes from the both of them.”
As Coi Leray expressed her concerned feelings towards releasing her album, fellow rapper and collaborator Lil Durk stopped her from giving up on her music career.
Coi had been dropping mixtapes since 2018, but her blooming career catapulted into the mainstream following the release of her single “No More Parties,” which became her first entry into the Billboard Hot 100. With her newfound fame, she’s been the target of body shaming and hate on her music, but with supportive artists like Lil Durk, she hasn’t quit.
“Almost gave up one day, and he told me don’t ever stop,” Coi wrote along with a picture of her and Durk. “Most artist show love from a distance on some weird shit, but this man right here believed in me, believe[d] in ‘No More Parties’ and been behind me ever since. He know a star when he see one, and I just wanna thank you for all your support. OTF FOREVER.”
On March 28, 2022, Coi had taken to social media to announce the release of the project, showing both the cover art and the release date together.
Days later, on March 31, 2022, Coi had again taken to social media to announce the feature list which showed many of the rap industry’s biggest artists such as Polo G, Lil Durk, and Chief Keef.
The official tracklist was announced on April 4, 2022, as Coi thanked everyone who helped out in the making of the project. The tracklist featured highly anticipated, snippets of songs such as “Paranoid,” “Mission Impossible,” and “Clingy.”
The album’s sound follows Coi Leray’s trendsetter type of song as they are bouncy, loud, and danceable. Despite showing Coi’s normal type of song, the album also shows off her versatility as she takes her chance to introduce a sorrowful and deep vibe to her music.
